He was predeceased by: his parents, Randall Helmey and Mamie Cook Helmey; and his wife Marilyn Howe Helmey. He is survived by: his family, Donald, Julie Helmey of Little River, SC, Brian and Kim Helmey of Charleston, SC; and his grandchildren, Robert Helmey of Charleston, SC, Jordan Vinck of Gilbert, AZ, Christopher Helmey of Charlotte, NC and Kiersten Helmey of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, and twelve great nieces and nephews, thirteen great, great nieces and nephews.
