He is survived by: his wife Margaret Smith; his children, Rick, Claude Spence (Barbara) of Raleigh and Timothy Spence of Raleigh; his granddaughter Brandy Hopkins (Jacob) of Hanahan, SC; his children, Heather Spence of Raleigh and Justin Spence of Raleigh; his great grandchildren, Sarah Hopkins and Alex Hopkins of Hanahan, SC.; and his siblings, Ernest Spence of Greenville and Carolyn S. Doepner of Asheville.
