Obituary | Joseph Lee Bagwell | Montlawn Memorial Park Funerals & Cremations Montlawn Memorial Park Funerals & Cremations.
A son of North Carolina founding families, Joe "Pops" Bagwell passed away peacefully at home Friday, May 3rd of 2024. He was the baby of his family, born to the late Donnell Bagwell and Lottie Mooneyham.
Joe met his life-long partner and wife, Annette, when they were only teenagers. They grew up playing baseball with many neighborhood kids, back in a time when Raleigh was the little capital city just a short road trip down from Mayberry. Together, they went on to establish, manage, and coach many baseball and softball teams in the Raleigh area.
In his younger years, Joe was always happy to help customers at local grocers and supermarkets. He would later go on to establish and flourish businesses in publishing, offset printing, and several in retail.
Even though he enjoyed a good horror flick, his favorite movie was American Graffiti, with his second favorite being Eddie and the Cruisers. He enjoyed popular music of his generation, including Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the soundtrack of Eddie and the Cruisers, and of course, Elvis!
His favorite pastimes were pier fishing, surf fishing, deep sea fishing, lake fishing, pond fishing, shopping for fishing, packing up to go fishing, talking about fishing, talking about going fishing, and just thinking about fishing. He treasured vacation fishing trips with all his kids, including annual trips with his son, Shane, and grandson, Joseph.
Papa Joe also loved to travel and went on many motorcycle trips with his daughter, Kelli. The two went on several cross-country trips throughout the years. Papa enjoyed spending time with all his kids and was very proud of their excellent scholastic and professional accomplishments, most recently of Shana and Sophie for their scholastic graduations. Keep going.
He will always be loved by Annette, Kelli, Shane, Shana, Joseph, Sophie ("Toots" – that's what papa called her), Judy, Wayne, Tammy, Ricky, Reese, Faye, Jay, Billy, Keith, Kelvin, Steve, many nieces and nephews, his surviving aunt, Nell, all his cousins, and Nugget.
Service of Rest will be at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh, on Thursday, May 9th, of 2024. Visiting starts at 12pm; chapel service at 1pm; with graveside service at 2pm.
