He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy L Shafer and Susan Rosecrans Shafer; and his sister Catherine Shafer Fieg of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.. He is survived by: his son James Shafer; his daughter-in-law Tricia of Fuquay-Varina; his daughter Michelle Shafer of Raleigh; his grandson Matthew Shafer; and his former wife Nettie Wyble Shafer of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Wake County SPCA in his memory.
