He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Hayes and Kathleen Hayes (Platt); his brothers, John Archie Hayes, James Hayward Hayes and Christopher Franklin Hayes; and his siblings-in-law, James McLauchlin and Mae Pearl Hayes.

He is survived by: his wife Judy Deloris Hayes; his children, Julia Lewis (Patrick), Nadine Hayes of North Carolina, D'Netra Mincey of New York, Nathaniel Hayes, Jr. and D'Metree Mincey of North Carolina; his grandson Matthew Lewis; his siblings, Thomas W. Hayes, Anthony Hayes (Audrey), Rosa McLauchlin (Hayes) and Mary Ellen Hayes; and his sisters-in-law, Nadine P. Hayes and Jocelyn M. Hayes.
