He is survived by: his wife Billie Atkinson Abernathy; his children, Melanie Abernathy Floyd (Neil) of Wake Forest and Kevin Abernathy (Jane) of Balsam Grove; his foster daughter Cheryl Smith Passarelli of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Rachel Floyd, Erin Floyd, Sarah Floyd, Shannon Floyd, Erica Abernathy, Riley Abernathy, Emma Howell and Hayden Howell (Kristina); and his siblings, Elizabeth Abernathy Byrd of Durham, Lynda Abernathy Miller of Fuquay-Varina and Wilbur Horace Abernathy (Jane Champion Abernathy). He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews.
