He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert Lee and Viola Gwynn Ayers; his son Ray Leonard; and his siblings, Irene Ayers, Mary Parnell, Victory Ricky Ayers and Andrew Luther Ayers.

He is survived by : his wife Betty Kidd Ayers; his children, Ann A. Swartout (John) of Ramseur, Teresa Lynn A. Parker of Seagrove, Angela M. Setliff (Jon) of Sophia and Joe Leonard (Ericka) of Climax; his siblings, Sheila Messick (Pete) of Julian, Dorothy Jernigan of Ramseur, Dale Ayers (Lisa) of Bennett and Payton Ayers of West Virginia; and his sister-in-law Patsy Ayers of Ramseur. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
