He was predeceased by: his daughter Elizabeth Ann Thompson Mathis; his sisters, Mary Margaret Montgomery and Lougenia Ruth Gaines; and his parents, Ethel Mae Crofts and Nathaniel A. Thompson, Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Peggy Hollowell Thompson; his daughter Laura Ellen Thompson of Winston Salem; his grandchildren, Hannah Peavy (Jon) of Winston Salem, Kristen Cooke (Kirby) of Walnut Cove, Joseph Mathis (Stephanie) of Winston Salem and Benjamin Mathis (Uriel) of Mount Airy; his great grandchildren, Lillian, Mary Beth Peavy, Ripken, Memphis Cooke, Darcy Mathis and Maisie Mathis; and his brothers, Nathaniel A. Thompson, III of Winston Salem and Charles S. Thompson of Asheville. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
