He was predeceased by: his parents, Napoleon James, Sr. and Sue Emma Mason James; and his brothers, William R. James, Sr., Napoleon James, Jr. and Ralph James.

He is survived by: his wife Cathy James; his grandchildren, Shamya, Jeremiah, Kayden, Kennedy, Kendall, Jordan, Serenity, Journi and Raelynn; his siblings, Sally Laverne Cooke of Henrico, Vivian J. Spruill of Henrico, Larry James (Jeanette) of Burlington and Dorothy James Jenkins of Shelbyville, Kentucky.; and his siblings-in-law, Margaret James Mason, Cecilia Gundy James, Gloria Alston, Andrew Greene, William Jefferson and Craig Jefferson. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family.

Viewing was held on Friday, September 25th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Saturday, September 26th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Boones Chapel Baptist Church (481 Barrows Mill Rd, Jackson, NC 27845). A burial was held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 at the Patillo Chapel Missionary Baptist Church (3119 River Rd, Henrico, NC 27842).
