He was predeceased by: his parents, John Smith Abernathy and Rosa Love Abernathy; and his grandparents, Grover Lee Love and Lena Mae Love. He is survived by: his wife Kathy Abernathy; his son James Benjamin Abernathy (Bambi); his stepdaughters, Shelly Whitten (Draper Mitchell) and Melinda Whitten (George Flowers); his grandchildren, Christopher Gray (Kansas), Jordan Gallo (Nick), Halie Moseley (John), Cody Cooke (Kaila), Angel Abernathy, Carlie Abernathy and Cheyanne Roach; and his great grandchildren, Nathon, Cade, Kinsley, Lorenzo and Lillia.
Visitation was held on Sunday, June 1st 2025 from 2:30 PM to 3:45 PM at the First Baptist Church (515 Becker Dr, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870). A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 1st 2025 at 4:00 PM at the same location.
