She was predeceased by: her parents, Linwood Bryant Joyner and Virgie Virginia Vaughan Joyner; her husband Thomas E. Whitley; and her brother Robert "Bob" Joyner. She is survived by: her boyfriend Joseph N. Pohle (Joe); her siblings, Carolyn Clopton of Roanoke Rapids and Linwood Joyner of Woodland; and her nieces, Kimberly Joyner of Jackson, Crystal Joyner of Conway, Beth and Becky Clopton of Roanoke Rapids.
