He is survived by: his wife Annie Hooper Scales; his son Joseph James Scales, I; his stepchildren, Anna Marie Hill, Nicholas Lamont Hill (Shacree), Ovelton Adams Wiley and Anton Lamar Wiley; his siblings, Linda Fields and John Henry Scales (April); his aunt Alvandela Campbell; and his brother-in-law Jessie Broadnax. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.
