He was predeceased by : his parents, Gracie Atkins and L. D. Thompson; and his siblings, Maggie Atkins Dowdy, Verta Haynes, Jack Atkins and Rebecca Riddick.

He is survived by : his wife Doris Atkins; his children, Jimmy Atkins Jr. and Umeka Covington; his grandchildren, Teneisha Brown, Rakeem Chesney, James Atkins IIl, Robert Pope Jr., Talitha Covington and Naomi Covington; his sister Mary Peaks; and his niece Phyllis Riddick. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 20th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Alston Chapel (884 Haw Branch Rd, Sanford, NC 27330). A burial was held on Saturday, April 20th 2024 at the same location.
