He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred Spencer and Annie Spencer; and his siblings, Alfred Alex Spencer Jr. (Berta Mae), Samuel Edward Spencer (Carol), Walter Lewis Spencer (Mildred), Magdalene Spencer Tucker (Elsie), Iredale Spencer Miller (John), Pearl Spencer Ferree (Randleman), Doris Spencer Beauchamp, Peggy Spencer Williams (Vance) and Linda Spencer Weatherly (Bruce).
He is survived by: his wife Sue Richardson Spencer of Seagrove; his children, Ric Spencer (Amy) of San Mateo, CA, Cindy Spencer Young (Matt) of Montreat, NC and Julie Spencer Raynor (Archie) of Durham, NC; his grandchildren, Ivy Young, Zoe Spencer, Spencer Young, Katie Spencer, Cecilia Young Bright (Eli) and Reynolds Young; his great grandchild Lucy Bright; and his sister Shurby Spencer Cagle (Max) of Seagrove.
