He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Delmar and Marion Davis Johnston. He is survived by: his children, Daniel Johnston (Kelsey) of Seagrove, Joseph Johnston (Jamie) of Seagrove and Virginia Holliday (Jeffrey) of Randleman; his stepchildren, Joshua Summey (Kenda) of Sophia, Jerod Summey of Sophia and Jacob Summey of Hillsborough; his godchild J. J. Summey; his siblings, Mike Johnston (Connie) of High Point, Benny Johnston (Lovie) of Denton, Eddie Johnston of Denton and Lori Anne Beck (Stan) of Thomasville; his grandchildren, Logan Hauser (Jason), Dylan Holliday (Samantha), Julie Johnston, Jake Johnston, Josh Johnston, Joseph Elliot Johnston and Cyrus Wayne Johnston; and his great grandchildren, Ella Grace, Kainzley and Wrenly.
Memorial may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Foundation or to the NC Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, NC.
