He was predeceased by: his parents, Roney Cheers and Madie Cheers; his son Jonathan Wheeler Cheers; and his siblings, Roney W. Cheers (Leona Cheers), Audrey Sessoms (Jimmy Sessoms) and William "Billy" Cheers.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Ormsby Cheers; his children, Jeffrey Martin Cheers, Kathryn Cheers Farmer (Richard Farmer) and Melissa Cheers Kumpel (Frederick Kumpel Jr.); his grandchildren, Sara Briannon Farmer and Joshua Colby Farmer; his granddaughter-in-law Kayla Farmer; and his sister-in-law Betty Cheers. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In recognition of his dedication to preserving local history, a commemorative plaque on the Shallotte Riverwalk honors his contributions to the town he loved so dearly.
