He was predeceased by: his son Shawn Chavis; and his siblings, Vivian Locklear, Bonnie McMillian, Faron Chavis and Larry Chavis.
He is survived by: his wife Joan Locklear Chavis; his children, Dwayne Chavis (Teresa) and Evana Locklear; his grandchildren, Christopher Chavis (Kristina), Daniel Chavis, Shane Chavis, Isac Chavis (Michaela), Avery Chavis and Jeremiah Chavis; and his siblings, Herbert Hoover Chavis, Jr. (Lisa), Joyce Jiles (Hank) and Jeannette Valderomes (Jose). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8th 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Friendly Temple Baptist Church Cemetery (308 Lyndsey Ln, Shannon, NC 28386). A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
