She was predeceased by: her parents, Luther Yates Brooks and Thelma Cabaniss Brooks; her husband John Whitaker; her daughter Janet Whitaker Austell; her granddaughter Melanie Austell; and her siblings, Betty Harris (Golda Glover) and Milton Brooks.
She is survived by: her sons, Phil Whitaker (Lynn) of Shelby and Kenneth Whitaker (Linda) of Shelby; her son-in-law Nick Austell; and her grandchildren, Melissa Austell Bradshaw, Rebekah Whitaker, Jessica Whitaker Francis, Terry Whitaker and Kelly Whitaker. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to Sandy Plains Baptist Church: 2112 New House Rd., Shelby, NC 28150.
