He was predeceased by: his parents, Joella Mercer and Jewel Mercer; his wife Lillian Audrey; his son Johnnie Gray; his siblings, Johnnie Gray, Robbie J., Ben, Mary Louise Thomas, Ila Whitfield and Love Whitfield; his siblings' children, Charlie Thomas, Cathy Whitfield and Jolyn Mercer; and his close friend Gracie.
He is survived by: his sons, Danny (Ellen) of Aurora, NC, Tommy of Bogue, NC and Bobby (Kim) of Morehead City, NC; his sisters, Blanchie Smith and Sylvia Ross of Lowland, NC; his grandchildren, Gena Lashley (Brian) of Chester, VA, Kellie Mercer of Washington, NC, Clint Mercer of Florida and Lindsay Goodman of Kure Beach, NC; and his great grandchildren, Ben and Lily Lashley of Chester, VA.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Emerald Isle Baptist Church or Gentiva Hospice in Pamlico County/New Bern, NC.
