He was predeceased by: his parents, Tom Buchanan and Bessie McMahan Buchanan; his wife Laura Bradley Buchanan; his sons, Dennis and John Buchanan (Linda); and his siblings, James, Emma McMahan, Ruby Green, Jessie Hall, Marie Jones and Zilia McMahan.

He is survived by: his son Doyle Buchanan (Vickie) of Sylva; his sister Hazel Jones of Franklin; his granddaughters, Amanda Justice (Michael) and Ameka Cole (Robert) of Sylva; his great grandchildren, Hunter, Adam Haylen Cole and Darcie Justice; his stepgrandson Brent West; his great grandchildren, Johnna, Cheyenne and Kayti; and his great great grandchildren, Madelyn and Carter.
