He was predeceased by: his daughter Chelsey LeeAnn Dowling; his grandparents, Wade, Helen Carman, Henry Grady, Sr and Anna Laura Dowling; and his friend Michael "Perry" Montgomery.

He is survived by: his son Kyle; his stepson Jason; his parents, Henry Grady Dowling Jr. of Webster and Dottie Dowling (Carman) of Sylva; his wife Teresa Stephens Dowling; his grandchildren, Brody, Tucker Dowling, Victoria, Lauren, Jason Junior and Alexandra Ramsey; his siblings, Anne Nixon (Keith) and Patrick Dowling (Paige); his nieces and nephews, Jesse, Danny Stephens, Hannah Nixon, David Nixon and Rebecca Nixon; his cousins, Wilson and Grady Kittrell; and his aunt Dorothy Cooper.

In lieu of flowers, a college fund for his grandchildren has been set up at State Employees Credit Union with branches in Sylva and Brevard.
