He was predeceased by: his parents, W. K. Shields (Bill) and Clara Kiser Shields; and his brother Gene Shields. He is survived by: his wife Jessie Cagle Shields; his daughters, Lois Danner (Wiley) and Teresa Cabe (Mickey); his granddaughters, Jessica Dills (Mickey) and Devon Danner-Allison (Derek); his great grandchildren, Weston, Avalee, Elanee and Darian; and his brother Gary Shields of Franklin.
