He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Bates and Flonnie Bates; his son Julian Bates; his grandson Christopher Bates; and his siblings, Willard Bates, Rev. John Bates, Larry Bates, Lester Bates Jr., Dickie Roberts, Jamaye Bates, Juanita Hoxit and Imojean Owen.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Gibson Bates; his children, Teresa Newman (Ray) of Franklin, Conrad Bates of Tuckasegee, Martha Lang (Keith) of Vale, NC, JoAnn Brown (Michael) of Tuckasegee, Margie Dunn (Frank) of Cherokee, Debbie Bates (Randy) of Tuckasegee and April Bates (Michael) of Cullowhee; and his sister Martha "Annie" Goins. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
