He was predeceased by: his father Herman Mitchell, Sr.; his brother Herman Mitchell, Jr.; and his stepfather William Paul Fogleman. He is survived by: his mother Flora Fay Williams Fogleman; his wife Gloria Barba Mitchell; his siblings, William "Matt" Mitchell (Christy) and Wanda Keefer; and his close friends, Mark Royalls and Kenny Phillips.
