He was predeceased by: his parents, Mark Potter and Hannah Potter; his son Stephen Ray Potter; and his brothers, Robert (Bobby), Hildred, Wesley and Mark Potter, Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Margaret Whichard Potter; his children, Barry Alan Potter (Connie) of Greenville, Deborah Martin of Greenville and Sandra Vanderpool (Richard) of Ruffin; and his brother Vernon E. Potter, Sr. of Raleigh. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
