He is survived by : his wife Willda Young Bell; his children, Grayson Bell (Cindy), Emily Wheeler (Charlie) and Adria (Daryl Whittemore); and his grandchildren, Brooke Davis, Collin Wheeler, Camden Herron, Hailey Wheeler, Jackson Bell, Sadie Whittemore, Dawson Gregory, Laney Whittemore, Bentley King, Sophia King, Charlie King and Lee Herron.

Benson Metcalf wrote a sympathy message

“I was a student of Joe Bell at North Buncombe in his drafting class from 1974 til 1978. Joe was much more than a teacher, he was a genuine friend. He and I traded knives, jokes and stories over sharpening sessions at his desk. Life happened and we lost touch after those years but I never forgot about Joe Bell and remembered him often and fondly during those many years after. Such a good man. I will miss his humor, smile and candor as I know many will. God Speed Joe Bell.... Benson Metcalf”
