He was predeceased by: his parents, William Lewis and Ada Mitchell Spender; and his sister Barbara. He is survived by: his wife Lynette Padrick Spender; his children, Cheryl Weathers and Christopher Grill (Michelle); his grandchildren, Sidney, Jenna Grill and James Weather; his great grandchildren, Athena and Merlin Weathers; and his brother William "Bill" Spender. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the Liberty Baptist Church (7957 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28411). The military honors will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 at 4:00 PM at the same location.
