He is survived by: his children, Nancy Clayton (Casey Champion) of Raleigh, Josephine Clayton of Wilson and Brian Clayton; and his grandchildren, Cameron Champion (Ana Wagstaff) of Birmingham and Katherine Champion of Raleigh.
