He was predeceased by: his parents, John Anderson and Elizabeth Gwynn Covington; his sister Anne C. Fulghum; and his wife Katie Teague Covington. He is survived by: his sons, John Anderson Covington III (Lynda) of Raleigh, Nelson Teague Covington (Janie) of Wilson and Thomas Gwynn Covington (Susan) of Wilmington; and his grandchildren, Kathryn, Nelson, Jack, Anna-Poe and Margaret.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1423, Wilson, NC 27894.
