He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Thornton and Lucille Adams Thornton; and his wife Bette East Thornton. He is survived by: his children, Donald R. Thornton, Jr. and Jennifer; his granddaughter Caroline Rae Shamel; and his sister-in-law Irene Chisenhall.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 20th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Forsyth Memorial Park (3771 Yadkinville Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106).
