He was predeceased by: his parents, George Mitchell and Mildred Mitchell; and his siblings, George Mitchell Jr. (Pauline), Hattie Mack (Larence), Margaret Ann Searcy and Sylvester Mitchell.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy C. Mitchell; his children, Joseph Mitchell (Bertha), Monticello Mitchell (Dawn), LaCheryl Montgomery (J. L.), LaRita Bell (Rupert W. Jr.), Denita Mitchell and Catanza Moore (Robert Jr.); his grandchildren, Vanika Garner (DeMarcus), LaCherie Mitchell (Bekah), DeJa Murray, Monticello Mitchell II, Carina Hairston, LaNita Bell and Diana Chew; his great grandchildren, Amaria Garner, Ania Garner, Marley Mitchell, Caleigh Hairston, Bekham Mitchell, Winter White and Quinn Murray; and his siblings, Catherine King (late Bronson), Gloria Barber (late Andy) and Alphonso Mitchell. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, relatives.
Viewing will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Russell Funeral Home (822 Carl Russell Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27101). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Antioch Baptist Church (5061 Lansing Dr, Winston-Salem, NC 27105). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 27th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
