Curt Laird McCracken Obituary

Curt Laird McCracken, age 68, of Youngsville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, family, and his beloved cats Odin and Freya, on September 25, 2026. He was born on May 18, 1958, in Kent, Ohio, to Heather Harvey and Don McCracken.

Curt's love of nature, wildlife, and understanding of ecosystems led him to earn a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science at Kent State University in Ohio. His first job right out of college was managing North Park, the city's only natural-setting park in Ohio where he built a bird refuge and transformed the park into a beautiful natural sanctuary. He later pursued a career with the State Department of Environment in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he managed several environmental programs and eventually retired.

He will be remembered for his appreciation of nature and for his compassion and love of animals. Curt rescued and adopted several dogs and cats during his lifetime, giving them a chance for a better life. He was a history buff and enjoyed discussing and sharing his knowledge of historical facts. He didn't believe in taking any shortcuts when it came to learning a subject. Curt was courageous and determined. He put himself through college while on a wheelchair and drove a handicap bus to help pay for his college tuition.

Curt loved camping, sailing, and boating. He was a great cook who enjoyed experimenting with different recipes. He made the best dressings and marinades.

He was a loving and devoted husband who often wrote love sticky notes for his wife. He loved and cared for his family.

Curt is survived by his wife Maria, his brother Jed McCracken and wife Cookie, his niece Erika and her husband Zach Demme, his great-niece Livia, and his nephew Ian Bent. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don McCracken and Heather Harvey, his sister, Melissa Bent, his aunt Ann and her husband, Gary Lyman.
