He was predeceased by: his wife Carol Schmierer; and his son Jeff Schmierer. He is survived by: his daughter Keri Rockwood (Stephen); his granddaughter Leah Dominguez (Antonio); his great grandchildren, Aliyah Dominguez and Isabella Dominguez; and his daughter-in-law Theresa Schmierer.
In the 1987-88 school year, Alvin was awarded the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award.
