He was predeceased by: his parents, John Schmidt and Bertha Schmidt (Maier); his former wife Emma Jean Schmidt; his son Jerry Schmidt; his siblings, John Schmidt, Genevieve Tschider and Evelyn Spieker (Dennis); and his parents-in-law, George and Agnes Leingang.
He is survived by: his wife Bernice Hellman; his children, Tammy Acuff (David), Don Schmidt Jr. (Tyann), Michael Schmidt (Rolenthea), Jesse Hellman (Lauree), Scott Hellman (Kandie), Tracy Meschke (Ryan) and Kurt Hellman (Nerissa); his sister Lillian Brewster (Wayne); and his sister-in-law Elaine Schmidt. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
