He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Schaff and Magdalena Schaff (Wetsch); his wives, Catherine Leingang and Ruby Schaff; his sons, Johnny and Adam; his stepson James "Jim" Hoppe; his daughter-in-law Elizabeth "Betty" Schaff; his grandsons, Christopher Schaff and Scott Thorson; his siblings, Bertha Heinrich (Paul), Barbara Saumell, Katherine Taghon (Robert), Leona Smith, Anton (Barbara), Paul (Ann) and Adam Schaff; and his in-laws, Michael Blasco, Ron Schwartz, Albert Schwartz, Marcella Plienis (Rubin), Ida Roebuck, Sharon Schwartz, Gladys Wahl, Harold Schwartz, Frank Leingang, Josephine Muth (Robert), Clementine Pivot (Robert), Lucielle Burk (Ron), Lester Leingang (Cindy) and Linda Fry (Tom).
He is survived by: his children, Kathryn Albrecht (Dave), Joseph P. of Mandan, William (Lenore) of Mandan, Robert (Nadine), Edward (Bonnie) of Bismarck and Andrew of Johnson City, TN; his stepchildren, Debra Haus (Ronald) of Granbury, TX, Steven Thorson (Roberta) of Arena, ND and Calvin Thorson (Dorothy) of Bismarck; his siblings, Marianne Blasco of Bismarck, Martin (Angie) of Mandan and Thomas (Lois) of Shakopee, MN; and his siblings-in-law, Betty Berg, Ann Schwartz, Delores Wagner, Annie Getz and Marlin "Nick" Leingang (Janelle). He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
