He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Schwalm and Malinda Schwalm (Dale). He is survived by: his wife Virginia Stenerson (VanOrsdale); his children, Rebekah Nelson (Dan) of Rockwall, Texas, Debra Beckett (Michael) of Barnesville, Minnesota, Philip Schwalm (Barb) of Owasso, Oklahoma, Miriam Hermes (Brian) of Osseo, Minnesota and Gloria Devine (Tom) of Springfield, Tennessee; his sister Karen Taylor of Aurora, Colorado; and his stepchildren, Jon Stenerson (Beth) of Las Cruces, Nancy Gonzales (Tony) of San Diego, California and Kristin Johnson (Doug) of Glyndon, Minnesota.. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, North Dakota.
