He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Bates and Pernella Bates (Twenge); his brother Gerald Bates; and his granddaughter Tami Jo Pederson (Wilts). He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Ann Johnson; his children, Brian Bates (Lorrie) of Apple Valley, MN, Brenda Kay Wilts (Bates), Scott Bates (Susan) and Fargo; his grandchildren, Nicole Bowman (James), Jamie Bertram (Scott), Andrew Bates (Wendi), Adam Bates (Kayla) and Alexander Bates (Jazlyn Brossart); and his great grandchildren, Morgan, Brayden Bowman, Makayla, Hayley, Isabelle Bertram, Jace Jo Pederson, Mackenzie, Kambryn Fassett, Ryker, Emilia Bates and Carter Eide. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In accordance with CDC and local guidelines, social distancing and masks will be required for attendance.
