With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of Alice M. Schmele in Grand Forks, North Dakota, born in Sioux City, Iowa, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on February 16, 2026 at the age of 89. She was predeceased by: her parents, Charles Carl and Ethel Marie Blackburn; her son James Paul Schmele (Jimmy); her siblings, Ruth "Foat" Blackburn and Harry Blackburn; and her great grandchildren, Bridger Johnson and Lillian Sandoz.

She is survived by: her husband Paul William Schmele (Bill); her daughters, Nadine Sandoz (Dwight) of St. Paul, Nebraska, Carol Vidic (Klemen) of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Mary Johnson (Nathan) of Grand Forks, Joanne Wise (Brian) of Orange City, Iowa and Donna Phillips of Grand Forks; her sister Nancy Johnson (Blackburn); and her grandchildren, Joshua Sandoz (Patricia), Bethanie Storer (Luke), Daniel Sandoz (Amy), Joel Sandoz (Shauna), Samuel Sandoz (Kiahley), Nathan Sandoz (Ashley), Charitie Sandoz, David Vidic, Samuel Vidic, Steven Johnson, Daniel Johnson (Rebekah), Benjamin Johnson (Brooke), Rebecca Montoya (James), Gabriel Delzer, Jacob Delzer (Kiley), Jeremiah Delzer (Reegan), Caleb Phillips, Carter Phillips and Axel Phillips. She is also survived by 35 great-grandchildren, with one additional great-grandchild.
