He was predeceased by: his parents, John Mertz and Emilie Mertz (Stadelman); his siblings, Louise, Lawrence, Leland, Darlene, John and Dallas; his sister-in-law Betty Kunz; and his son-in-law Steven Murphy.
He is survived by: his wife Alice; and his children, Melodee Murphy Schraven (Mike), Melinda Chick (Ted), Marcie Eliason (Howard), Danny Mertz (Melinda) and Marilee Kline (Doug). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Monday, September 7th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Hertz Funeral Home (800 Birch Ave, Harvey, ND 58341). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Hurdsfield Community Center (221 4th St W, Hurdsfield, ND 58451).
Memorial donations may be given to the Hurdsfield Community Center or The Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hurdsfield, ND.
