He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Aten and Elizabeth Aten; and his sister Sharon Aten. He is survived by: his wife Caroline of Atkinson; his siblings, Don Aten (Mary) of Loveland, CO, Cheri Frisch (Terry) of Atkinson and Cindy Weale (Denny) of Omaha; and also, Charley and Geraldine Skopec. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

“Dear Caroline: We were indeed sorry to hear of Gary's death. He always held a special place in my (Ron's) life. I remember first learning of you and Gary when we were apartment dwellers at Garrett, same floor, directly across, second floor and a cement path in between. Of course, I followed his career and was extremely grateful for the special help he gave me in letting the Bloomfield parish be my model for my doctoral dissertation. Please feel our prayer support and sympathy.”
