He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles Hawthorne and Doris Hawthorne (Reed); his spouse Jean E. Marco; and his siblings, Vivian Kolm, Lyle and Russell.

He is survived by : his children, Kyle (Diane Hawthorne), Kayla (Todd Roberts) and Kent (Theresa Hawthorne); and his sister Bernadine Batenhorst of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
