He was predeceased by: his daughter Michele; his parents, Renken Carstens and Liz Coates (Coates); his parents-in-law, Bill and Ruby Kassebaum; and his brother-in-law Harold Corey.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Shaffer of Beatrice; his daughters, Lisa Decker (Scott) and Penny Shaffer; his grandchildren, Cortni Smith (Bobby), Wyatt Decker (Meredith) and Neely Shaffer; his great grandchildren, Crew, Reece, Sutton, Remi and Collins; and his siblings-in-law, Carole Corey, Jerry Kassebaum (Judy) and Larry Kassebaum (Joyce). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Acute Care at BCH and Beatrice Health & Rehab.
