He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Harold Johnston and Ermina Elizabeth Johnston (Hoyle); his grandparents, Walter, Bessie Hoyle, Robert and Sylvia Johnston; his parents-in-law, Loren and Helen Balderson; his sister-in-law Kay McCune (Judy McDonald); his extended family Tom Stewart; his grandson-in-law Alex Morey; and his cousins, David and Brian Hoyle.

He is survived by: his wife Karen Johnston (McCune) of Cortland; his daughters, Karolyn Pethoud (David) of Firth, Susan Schwartz of Beatrice and Wendy Milne (Mark) of Gretna; his grandchildren, Mackenzie Smith (Tim) of Beatrice, Elizabeth McCreedy (Shane) of Martell and Seth Milne of Gretna; his great grandchildren, Ivy, Reid Smith, Holden, Nolan Morey and Connor McCreedy; his son-in-law Michael Schwartz; and his cousins, Jay Hoyle (Kae), Grant Hoyle (Melodie), Walter Hoyle (Shirley), Gary Hoyle (Ruthie), Linda Stewart, John and Mike Hoyle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wilber Care Center in care of the mortuary.
