He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Nielsen and Marilyn Nielsen; and his brother Gary Nielsen. He is survived by: his wife Sandy; his children, Megan Vander Haar (Jade) and Erik Nielsen (Sarah); his grandchildren, Zachary, Brody Vander Haar, Kinley and Nolan Nielsen; his sister Sharie Hubert (Andy); and his sister-in-law Mary Nielsen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
