He was predeceased by : his parents, Harry and Amanda; his siblings, Daniel, Merle, Norlan and Velma; his daughter Lisa Madsen; and his granddaughter Laura Madsen.

He is survived by : his wife Helga Jessen of Lexington; his brother Gary; his sons, Rev. Alan Hanson (Mary) of Omaha and Duane Hanson (Shirley) of Springsfield; his son-in-law Paul Madsen; his grandchildren, Maren Collins (Jay), Kirsti Fitzgerald (Bill), Jeremy Hanson (Erin), Dane Madsen and Jacob Madsen; and his great grandchildren, Violeta Collins, Rowan Fitzgerald, Ariana Fitzgerald and Eliza Hanson. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and many other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Christ Lutheran Church or the Danish Archives in Blair.
