He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Z. Johnston and Hazel Johnston (Hecht); his siblings, Oliver, Lyle, Howard and Wilda Brown; his daughter Tina Hall; his stepdaughter Kayleen Repenning; and his sister-in-law Janet Newcomb.

He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Petersen (Appleyard); his sons, Todd and Tim; his grandchildren, Abby Hall, Clair Hall Quick, Lexi, Drake, Liam and Nova Johnston; his stepchild Dex Petersen Kimberly Cosby; his stepgrandchildren, Dan, Brandon Petersen, Tyler, Sierra, Brune, Kara Malone, Joel Repenning and Michelle; his great grandchildren, Henry Malone, Jack Thoene, Monica, Julia and Grace Thoene; and his sister-in-law Judy Mercer.
