He was predeceased by : his parents, Louis Vanis and Mary Vanis (Sercl); his parents-in-law, Ted and Marie Cermak; and his siblings-in-law, Don Hilger, Duane, Donna Cermak, Polly and Emil Tesina.

He is survived by : his wife Judy Vanis; his daughters, Denise Marvin (Keith), Deb Ossian of David City, Julie Kriz (Terry) of Brainard and Kristy Pohl (Matt) of David City; and his sister Mary Lou Hilger of David City. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.
