He was predeceased by: his parents, Lilly Smith and Ellis Smith. He is survived by: his wife Joyce; his daughters, Brenda Skarohlid (John) and Stacey Darnell (Buddy); and his grandchildren, Jayde Hagle (Jordan), J. J. Skarohlid (Grace), Justin Skarohlid (Zoie), Cody Darnell (Timber) and Morgan Sutphen (Ty). He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established for the Sheridan County Ag Society.
