He was predeceased by : his father Daniel Vapenik. He is survived by : his mother Patricia Vapenik (Heine); his wife Angela Hengelfelt; his sons, Axel and Cruz; his grandmother Pat Vapenik of Elsie; his brother Zane Vapenik of Oshkosh; his parent-in-law Corwin Hengelfelt (Nancy) of Stromsburg, NE; his siblings-in-law, Seth and Mandy Hengelfelt; his nieces and nephews, Wyatt and Sydney; his siblings-in-law, Leah and Jason Lonsdale; his nephews, Devin and Emmitt; his niece Maya; his siblings-in-law, Nathan and Kaysha Hengelfelt; and his nieces and nephews, Tinsley and Kaisyn. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in David's memory to benefit his children.
