He was predeceased by: his parents, Elizabeth O'Brien and Dr. Paul O'Brien; his brothers, Jerry and Patrick; and his granddaughter Jessica Hinz.

He is survived by: his daughters, Shelly Hinz, Stacey O'Brien (Randal Williams) and Steph Sherrerd (Andy Sherrerd); his stepchildren, Larysa Trone (Tonya Trone), Stephanie Gideon (Will Gideon), Matt Gaukel and Nate Gaukel (Justine Gaukel); his wife Gaylene O'Brien of Hastings; and his brothers, Jim of Spalding, NE and Larry of Cook, NE. He is also survived by three daughters; four stepchildren; ten grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital or Start Over Rover.
